Duke of Edinburgh Award Update

DofE With a Difference is the temporary new name for the scheme which is being used to reflect the fact that it has made several changes to allow students to progress with the award during the coronavirus outbreak.

1. Participants can now volunteer for family members, for example by mentoring or coaching younger siblings.  However remember that assessors must not be members of the family.

2. Participants can now change section activities more than once. Time spent on previous activities will still count towards completion.

3.DofE have introduced the 2020 DofE Certificate of Achievement. This will be awarded to all students who have complete their volunteering, skills and physical sections but who are unable to do their expeditions at the moment. Holding this certificate will allow students to enrol onto the next level of the award.

As a school we will not be taking students out on expedition this year. The plans going forward are…

Current Bronze Students – All should aim to complete their volunteering, skills and physical sections by the end of 2020  to achieve their 2020 DofE Certificate of Achievement. Students will then complete their expeditions in a slightly different format to that previously published but in line with DofE guidelines. There will be a practice expedition from school in spring 2021, followed by the qualifying expedition which will involve two nights of camping and a two day expedition.

Students wishing to progress to the Silver Award may do so on completion of their 2020 DofE certificate and use their Bronze qualifying expedition as their Silver practice expedition, this will significantly reduce costs for the Silver Award.

Current Silver Students - All should aim to complete their volunteering, skills and physical sections by the end of 2020  to achieve their 2020 DofE Certificate of Achievement. Students will carry out their practice and qualifying expeditions in 2021. Timings will be determined to minimise exam preparation disruption.

New Bronze, Silver and Gold students will be able to enrol in the autumn term to participate in the DofE award.

Remember that the coronavirus does not mean that your DofE has to stop. It just may mean that you have to do it a little differently. I hope that all students who are currently part of the fabulous  Joseph Rowntree DofE team are continuing with their programme and finding solutions to enable them to achieve the 2020 Certificate of Achievement.
